Thank you very much for your excellent presentations, perceptive comments, and good fellowship at the XXVII World Congress on the Philosophy of Law and Social Philosophy! More than 800 philosophers of law gathered from every corner of the world to illuminate all aspects of the relationship between “Law, Reason, and Emotion”. I am grateful for the many things you taught me during our week together in Washington.
The purpose of our Association is the cultivation and promotion of legal and social philosophy on the national and international levels. This noble effort to introduce reason and justice into law and society far transcends the academic arena. Our work does and should make a significant contribution to the development of a better and more just world order.
With that in mind I am delighted that so many of the papers delivered at our World Congress will be published in our Association’s quarterly, the Archiv für Rechts- und Sozialphilosophie, and in other journals, books, and collections of papers. Publication captures and extends the insights and excitement of our Congresses and make them available to many who were not able to attend.
I am very grateful for the honor you have done me in electing me your president. I inherit a vigorous and thriving organization from my predecessor, Prof. Dr. Ulfrid Neumann, and thank him for his leadership and inspiration. My primary duty as I see it in the next four years will be to extend the initiatives and constant growth of the I.V.R. over the last century to more people in more nations and in a larger number of fora than was possible before. Our new ability to publish and converse on-line opens vast new vistas for the international exchange of ideas.
I am eager to hear from all of you and particularly from the leaders of the national sections in which most of our work takes place about how I can assist you in publishing your work, supporting your conferences, and making your ideas better known. The next World Congress, on the subject of “Peace” as it relates to justice and the philosophy of law will take place in Istanbul in July, 2017. I look forward to seeing you there!
With gratitude and all best wishes,
